A few days ago, after a lecture on city strategic governance at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain, Canary Islands), one of the students asked me an interesting question: “How many people can be made up of the team of the most important public managers, in which are the most important decisions designed?” I replied that my experience of working in such teams with mayors and their closest associates indicates that 10 is the absolute maximum, but the best results we obtained when there were 5-6 of us. Not only I have such experiences. The richest man in the world
Jeff Bezos (president, managing director and CEO of Amazon) once said that to make strategic decisions he appoints at most teams that can be fed with two pizzas. I recommend this approach 🙂
There were other interesting questions. For the importance of fossil fuels in local development, how urban development strategies relate to the UN Millennium Development Goals, and why public development strategies so rarely contain key performance indicators. Overall it was very interesting. As usual at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 🙂
